Resumen

A study was conducted to confirm the presence of the spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) and obtain preliminary data on their behavior and their habitat in the southwestern region of Chimalapas, Oaxaca. The data were collected in the dry season for six days; direct and indirect methods were used, including interviewing local assistants. In this study, we found that the abundance of these primates is similar to that reported for other distribution areas with well preserved habitat. In addition, we recorded two species and a genus of plants not previously reported as part of their diet. Although the evaluation suggests that human impact on this habitat, is small scale, we recommend implementing conservation strategies, including long-term study on these primates.
