Abstract

This research reports the inventory of mammals of Municipio de Cosoltepec, Oaxaca, México, which is located in the northern part of the Huajuapan District in Sierra Mixteca, near the border on the state of Puebla. Field work was made during August 200 - September 2007 using Sherman, Museum Special and Tomahawk traps, mist nets and one camera-trap; mammals also were recorded utilizing indirect methods and visual observations. A total of 32 species, 30 genera, 13 families and seven orders were recorded. Although Cosoltepec is not a large area, the number of documented species is relatively high; most taxa are nearctic and display a widespread distribution; this region is also relevant due to the occurrence of endemic species. Unfortunately, several mammal species are facing conservation problems locally and must be protected. Taxa recorded in this study represent the first records of mammals for Municipio de Cosoltepec and represent an important data set for the knowledge of mammals of Oaxaca.
